For Alex, the truest thing he knows is that people are terrible at appreciating what they have.

Alex believes this tendency had to be advantageous at some point in the evolutionary history of humanity, but is terribly misplaced in our modern society.

It's not that we never feel content, but Alex sees the huge push in society to combat this feeling of unease points to our need to constantly work against the gravity of ingratitude.
